All of them, to my eye, greatly exaggerate the effects that people remember CRT displays have, creating what I consider to be a mostly distorted and warped, hyper retro re-imagining of those "good ol' days". I have a 4K tv at home that I do my retro games on and I have tried most of the CRT shader presets in retroarch and other emulators. When I go to my local arcade and play on the retro machines they have like Donkey Kong, Pac Man, whatever, and look really close, I don't see anything that resembles a shader config on an LCD monitor. That's why I use the shader from the analog shader pack when I'm dealing with the PSX ) It appears that dithering on the PSX works properly on CRT-royale as long as all the colours are above a certain level of brightness once they go below that level, it turns into a big mess. Everything looked the way it was supposed to with proper colour gradients and no hard edges or blotches of black or green. I was able to get dithering working properly by using the crt-royale-tvout+image-adjustment variant and turning down the black levels (although obviously the shader can't be used in that state because it makes everything look light grey, like a TV with brightness set to 100 and contrast set to 0). it is a problem with the shader there are other CRT-style shaders that get the dithering right.įrom what I can see (and I don't know any of the technical terms to describe this), it seems to be an issue with how CRT-royale deals with dark colours.
